Flowline vs RescueTime, ActivityWatch, and other time trackers
People usually land here looking for a RescueTime alternative or an ActivityWatch alternative that stays on the PC. This table is the practical difference, not a ranking. Pricing and plan names change. When a cell depends on the vendor's current offer, it says so.

RescueTime alternative, with a limit
RescueTime's pitch is automatic tracking plus reports in their cloud. Flowline does the automatic part on Windows and stops there: no account, no uploaded timeline, no coaching emails. You lose multi-device history and their mobile apps. You keep the SQLite file.
ActivityWatch alternative, different shape
ActivityWatch is the closest project in spirit. It is local, open source, and more portable. You assemble watchers and often live closer to the raw events. Flowline is narrower: Windows only, a fixed dashboard, editable category rules, distraction alerts, and Pomodoro blocks. If you want to script the data, ActivityWatch is the better base. If you want to install and read today, start with Flowline.
Toggl Track is a timer
Toggl Track expects you to start and stop entries, then report them to a team. Flowline never asks for that on ordinary app switches. It is a poor fit if your job is billing hours to clients. It is a better fit if you forget the timer exists by 10 a.m.
ManicTime is the Windows incumbent
ManicTime has tracked Windows apps automatically for years, and it sells business editions for teams. Flowline does not compete with those editions. The overlap is personal automatic tracking on one PC, with Flowline free and inspectable. ManicTime has a free Windows version alongside paid licenses and a longer track record. Check their current license before you assume a price.
Questions this comparison gets
Is Flowline a RescueTime alternative?
For personal Windows tracking, yes, if you want automatic capture without a cloud account. RescueTime still fits if you need their reports, coaching, or multi-device sync. Flowline will not replace a team plan.
Is Flowline an ActivityWatch alternative?
Partly. Both store data locally and are open source. Pick ActivityWatch if you want cross-platform watchers and a hackable event log. Pick Flowline if you want a Windows app with rules, a focus dashboard, Pomodoro blocks, and goals already in the UI.
Is Flowline a Toggl Track alternative?
Only if you hate starting a timer. Toggl Track is built around manual time entries and team reporting. Flowline never asks you to press start for ordinary app tracking, and it has no team workspace.
Does Flowline replace a website blocker?
No. It can notify you after a stretch of distracting activity. It does not block sites or apps. Pair it with a blocker if that is the behavior you want.
Try the Windows build
If the table's Flowline column is the one you wanted, install it. If you needed Mac, a team dashboard, or a site blocker, it will not grow into those.
